Examine Yourselves, Live in Grace
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14
Paul’s closing words in 2 Corinthians 13 are both sobering and comforting. He calls the believers to examine themselves, correct what is wrong, pursue restoration, and live in peace. Yet these challenging instructions are surrounded by reminders of God’s presence, Christ’s grace, and the Holy Spirit’s fellowship. The chapter shows us that spiritual maturity is not merely knowing what we believe; it is allowing God to examine how we live.
Paul urges the Corinthians to “examine yourselves” and test whether their faith is genuine. This is not an invitation to endless self-condemnation. It is a call to honest reflection before God. We can become skilled at appearing strong while hiding resentment, pride, compromise, or unbelief. But God does not expose our hearts to shame us. He reveals what needs healing so that we can return to wholeness.
A sincere spiritual examination asks questions such as: Is my life becoming more like Christ? Am I quick to repent? Do my words build others up? Do I seek peace, or do I quietly nurture conflict? Is my faith visible in love, humility, patience, and obedience? These questions may be uncomfortable, but they are life-giving when asked in the presence of grace.
Paul also tells the Corinthians to rejoice, pursue restoration, encourage one another, and live in peace. This reminds us that holiness is not an isolated project. God forms us in community. We need people who will encourage us, correct us, pray for us, and help us see what we cannot see on our own. Likewise, we are called to become people who restore rather than destroy—people who speak truth with gentleness and extend forgiveness freely.
The final blessing of the chapter points us to the heart of Christian life: the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Grace meets us in our failure. God’s love gives us security and purpose. The Holy Spirit draws near, teaches us, strengthens us, and unites us with God and with one another.
You do not have to examine yourself alone or depend on your own strength to change. Invite God to search your heart. Confess what He reveals. Receive His forgiveness. Then take one faithful step toward restoration, peace, or obedience.
Thought of the day: Today, let your self-examination lead not to fear but to deeper trust. Christ is not waiting to condemn those who turn toward Him. He is graciously making His people new.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, search my heart and reveal anything that keeps me from reflecting Your character. Give me humility to repent, courage to make things right, and grace to encourage others. Help me live in the love of the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Make me more like You and use my life to bring peace. Amen.
