Paul’s Final Warnings & Exhortations

2 Corinthians 13:1-14

INITIAL SUMMARY:

2 Corinthians Chapter 13: Paul warns the recipients of his impending visit, emphasizing the need for accountability and self-examination of their faith. He stresses the importance of Christ's power and encourages them to do what is right, regardless of appearances. The author expresses hope for their restoration and aims to avoid harshness upon his return. He concludes with a call for unity, peace, and mutual encouragement, along with greetings from fellow believers and a blessing of grace, love, and fellowship.


OUTLINE:

I. Paul’s Coming Visit (13:1–10)

A. The number (13:1a): This will be his third visit.

B. The need (13:1b–10): The apostle feels this trip is necessary for several reasons.

1. Paul’s witness against them (13:1b–4): He reminds the church of Deuteronomy 19:15, which says that every truth must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses; thus, Paul’s third trip.

2. Paul’s warning to them (13:5–6): He urges the Corinthians to examine themselves to determine whether they are actually saved.

3. Paul’s wish for them (13:7–10): He hopes to find them mature, not needing further chastisement.

II. Paul’s Closing Words (13:11–13)

A. His fourfold admonition (13:11)

1. Rejoice (13:11a).

2. Change your ways (13:11b).

3. Encourage each other (13:11c).

4. Live in harmony and peace (13:11d).

B. His threefold benediction (13:12–13)

1. “May the love of the Father be with you” (13:12, 13b).

2. “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you” (13:13a).

3. “May the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you” (13:13c).
