God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity
Romans 1:18-32

Who in your family is a lover of the great outdoors?
What causes you to stand in awe of God? Being in the mountains? Walking along the seashore? Working in the garden?

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

  • God is ... What do we learn about God in this passage?
  • We are ... What do we learn about people in this passage?
  • This is probably the most descriptive passages in the Bible on the "fall of mankind." In Romans 1:18, what did mankind do when given "the truth" about God?
  • How did God expect mankind to know "the truth" before Jesus Christ came into the world in Romans 1:19-20?
  • Why then do people tend to worship the creation rather than the Creator in Romans 1:21-23, 25?
  • How does God respond to these evil attitudes? When mankind did not follow the truth, what did God let them do according to Romans 1:24, 26, 28?
  • I will ... What has the Holy Spirit revealed to us in this passage? How can I apply it to my life this week?
  • Do you think our society has changed for the better or the worse since Paul wrote this description?
  • Paul explains in the passage that the root cause for the ills in our society is a "depraved mind" or the sin nature in all of us. How does this view differ from what modern psychology teaches?
  • If you could take a social psychologist on a tour of your community for a good look at the depraved mind in action, where would you take this person? What would you show the psychologist within your own life?
  • You can ... Who do you know who needs to hear this? Feel free to share with others by social media links at the bottom of this.

Opening Thoughts: Our hearts' tendency is to be drawn to idols that promise immediate gratification. As someone has said, we often "turn good things into God things." You can be different by submitting your longings and loyalties fully to the one and only God.

v  “Track Walking” all in the same direction.

v  Romans 12:2

o   You are either conformed or being transformed

o   Scamming the Scammers

§  John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Text: Romans 1:18-32

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Summarize the main story: Describe the events of the story in your own words.

v  Review and retell the story.

Reflections for applications:

v  You were created to know, love & worship your Creator God

v  Many people trade the real God for a phony version of God

o   Psalm 106:20 They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull which eats grass.

o   Exodus 32:4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods Israel who brought you up out of Egypt.”

v  Deceit leads to distorted thinking, and distorted thinking darkens our hearts to God.

v  Idols are so deadly because they deceive us, distort our thinking, and ultimately destroy us.

o   Idol of the historic buddha.

§  Our transformative move: We need to move from idol worship to God worship.

§  Romans 12:2 (NIV) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

§  Romans 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
