Life of Paul - Death Of Paul = September 22

Paul's Death

Possible Date: 67 A.D.

The Death Of Paul In Rome
by A.T. Robertson

"The details are all wanting. Tradition supplies only a few, which may be true or not. The story is that Paul was beheaded on the Ostian Road. It was customary for criminals of prominence to be executed several miles out of the city so as to avoid the crowds. We may picture the event in a possible manner. One day in late spring or early June the executioners came to Paul's dungeon and led him out of the city. One is reminded of Jesus as he bore his cross along his Via Dolorosa. Paul, as a condemned criminal, would be the victim of the rabble's sport. He would have no defender. We do not know if Luke was with Paul to the very last. We may at least hope so. If he could, he would surely walk along as near Paul as would be allowed. But no band of Christians followed with him now. He was going out of Rome on his way to the true Eternal City. He knew Rome well, but his eyes were fixed on other things. Outside the city the busy, merry life of the time went on. The crowds flowed into town. Some were going out. Paul was only a criminal going to be beheaded. Few, if any, of the crowds about would know or care anything about him. At a good place on the road some miles out the executioners stopped. The block was laid down. Paul laid his head upon it. The sword (or axe) was raised. The head of the greatest preacher of the ages rolled upon the ground. Tradition says that a Roman 'matron named Lucina buried the body of St. Paul on her own land, beside the Ostian Road.' Be that as it may, no Christian can come to Rome, especially by the Ostian Road, without tender thoughts of Paul, the matchless servant of Jesus." (A.T. Robertson, Epochs In The Life Of Paul, pp. 316-317)

When toxic people realize they can no longer control you they try to control how others see you. They lie about you, try to set you up, paint you into a color you are not. The misinformation is hurting and unfair, but true preachers of the gospel know that persecutions are expected and they press on. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). Jesus said, “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man” Luke 6:22 | NIV

Power, Love, Self-Control
https://www.verseoftheday.com/en/02281998/

For years Cindy Courtney has worn a face mask in public. The 58-year-old woman from Stanley, a town about 30 miles north of Edinburgh in Scotland, suffers from severe allergies. Inhaling particles from paint fumes, car exhaust, weed killer, perfume and dozens of other substances can trigger anaphylactic shock. She can experience severe itches and her whole body can turn beet red. A sudden attack could cause her to quit breathing; danger and death is a daily companion. A mask is not an option, it’s necessary to her survival. And that’s the way it was until a couple of weeks ago.
Her local grocery store has been spectacular in helping her to acquire food that is safe for her. The staff knows her well and they have been assisting her food orders for some time. But suddenly, other customers recoiled as if she were their worst enemy or a nightmare come true. They assumed she carried COVID-19 and was carelessly appearing in public, putting everybody in danger. She was insulted, threatened and harassed by complete strangers who presumed she was infectious. The staff of the grocery store had to intervene to protect her. Now she is practically afraid to venture out of her house for any reason. An attitude of suspicion and fear has turned ordinary people into paranoid bullies. Apprehensive distrust of our neighbors may be a lasting legacy of this pandemic if we choose wariness over welcome.
“For God did not give us a spirit of fearfulness but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7—my translation).
As Paul urged Timothy to use his Divinely bestowed gifts to serve boldly, he chose a word that is often translated as “fearfulness” or “timidity.” The most common use of the word in ancient literature, though, conveyed the meaning, “cowardice.” Paul likely didn’t intend to charge Timothy with cowardice, but the strength of the word carries a shameful punch. It reminds us that God did not call us to safety and comfort, to avoid all hazards and hide ourselves from potential harm. God called us to serve Him in a multitude of ways, including caring for others even in the face of risk. And that is what Christians have always done.
We are living in a time unlike anything we’ve previously seen. We have astounding opportunities to display the love of Jesus as we care for our friends and neighbors. We show our love for others by keeping the Center for Disease Control boundaries, washing our hands, rejecting the harmful practice of hoarding, avoiding unnecessary travel and interaction and by frequently checking on people by telephone and internet. We will not live in fear and suspicion, automatically assuming that every person around us is a potential threat to health and safety. We will not treat others—made in the image of God—as enemies to be shunned. We will continue to see all people as God’s very special children and if they need our help, we will help. We will be as wise as we know how, but we will be Christians and express the love and grace of Jesus Christ as long as He gives us life. He’s given us His Spirit—and in us that means power, and love, and self-control.

Life of Paul - Paul's Second Letter to Timothy = September 18

Life of Paul - Paul's Second Letter to Timothy

Possible Date: 67

Scripture: 2 Timothy

#Paul
#Apostle Paul
#Timothy

Theme: Facing imminent death, Paul encourages Timothy to carry on the ministry and faithfully guard the gospel in the face of persecution and false teaching.

NOTE: Paul authored this "Pastoral" book after completing his fifth and final missionary journey. He writes his last of fourteen books to his best friend Timothy. The apostle is a prisoner in Rome waiting for what would be his martyrdom at the hands of the Romans.

Although there is no direct biblical record that has shed light on the matter, it appears that Paul may have been re-arrested either in Nicopolis or Troas and returned to Rome under a sentence of death. This seems likely because in a second letter to Timothy, written, perhaps A.D. 64-67, Paul once again refers to himself as a prisoner and mentions having made what was a legal defense.

Companions who were recently with him had departed (2 Timothy 4:10), leaving him alone–“Only Luke is with me” (2 Timothy 4:11). Presumably, Timothy was still in Ephesus (2 Timothy 4:19), where Paul had left Priscilla and Aquila at the end of his second journey (Acts 18:18, 19), and where he had stationed Timothy to oversee the work in Asia Minor.

The tone of Paul's last known letter indicates that Paul knows his time is short. Several of his supporters have deserted him in the face of persecution, and Paul wants Timothy to come to him as soon as possible. Tychicus, who has been Paul's messenger on other occasions, is being sent to Ephesus. Perhaps to carry this letter and also to relieve Timothy so that Timothy can travel to be with Paul. Paul warns Timothy about the coming of opposition and encourages him to be strong in the defense of his faith. There is a sense of urgency in his exhortations as if Timothy is Paul's last link with future generations of those in whom the gospel will be entrusted.

No records indicate whether Timothy was ever able to be with Paul before Paul died. Although the exact date and circumstances of Paul's death are unknown, early historical consensus establishes that Paul died a martyr's death. In any event, the second letter to Timothy seems to be Paul's last.

NIV Study Bible Intro: Titus

NOTE: From Macedonia, Paul is about to leave for Nicopolis in Greece. He has decided to spend the winter and expects Titus to join him. Paul authored this "Pastoral" book right after the apostle was released from a prison in Rome and probably written shortly after 1 Timothy but before the apostle’s re-arrest and imprisonment in A.D. 66. Paul had left Titus in Crete to oversee the work on that island (Titus 1:5).

Before leaving, he writes a letter to Titus, whom we had earlier left in Crete. Titus faces some of the same challenges as Timothy in his efforts to preserve doctoral purity and establish effective local congregations. Therefore, Paul's letter to Titus resembles his letter to Timothy in its emphasis on false teaching, church organization, and instruction in Christian living.

Little is known about Titus personally (he is never mentioned in Acts). He was an uncircumcised Greek who was apparently converted to Christianity under Paul’s ministry (Galatians 2:1). He played an important role in Paul’s relationship with the Corinthian church (2 Corinthians 7:6, 7; 8:16; 12:18).

The purpose of the letter was to encourage Titus in his task of organizing, instructing, and appointing leaders for the churches of Crete (Titus 1:5). It was also intended to help him stop the false teachers who threatened church authority, unity, and morality ( Titus 1:10–16; 3:9–11).

Opening Thoughts:

v  Bridges

v  Generosity is a way of life.

o   We think we were created to consume. But as image-bearers of God, we were actually made to be generous givers. Life is more abundant when we embrace generosity and develop a giving heart.

o   What does it mean to be created in the image of God?

§  Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

§  John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Text: 1 Timothy 6:11-19

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Final Charge to Timothy

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness12 Fight the good fight of the faith. 20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.

Grace be with you all.
